AGRITECH | Drone application in practice

We recently engaged OzTech Drones to complete a day of spraying across one of the properties we manage. The purpose was not to trial or roll out a new system, but to observe how drone application performs under normal farm conditions and where it fits within day-to-day operations.

Good farm management comes back to using the right tool in the right situation. Drone application is one of those tools. It is not suited to every job, but in specific conditions it offers practical advantages that are difficult to achieve with conventional equipment.

Precision and input efficiency

Drone spraying systems use GPS-guided flight paths to apply product across defined zones. On the day, this resulted in consistent coverage with minimal overlap between passes.

These systems operate using ultra-low-volume application. Industry work, including Queensland DPI’s AgTech in Action, indicates that this can reduce chemical use by up to approximately 50% and water use by up to approximately 90% in suitable applications. The practical implication is not only reduced inputs, but also less frequent refilling, lower water transport requirements, and more time spent applying product.

Coverage and operational scale

Coverage rates vary depending on payload, layout, and refill logistics, but drones typically operate in the range of 4 to 20 hectares per hour, with the potential to cover up to approximately 150 hectares in a day under suitable conditions.

Note: Windy conditions. Water-only spray. Some footage sped up.

Labour requirements are materially lower than conventional spraying operations, with industry comparisons suggesting labour reductions of up to 90% in certain applications. Setup time is also reduced compared to tractor and boom systems, particularly where multiple blocks or fragmented areas are involved.

Access and timing

The block included wet ground following rainfall, uneven terrain, and sections that are not easily accessed with machinery. Under these conditions, drone application was able to proceed without delay.

Maintaining timing is often the limiting factor in these situations, particularly for post-rain weed activity. The ability to operate immediately, without waiting for ground conditions to improve, is a practical advantage.

Ground impact and environmental considerations

With no machinery moving through the block, there is no soil compaction and no traffic damage to pasture or crop. This is a relevant consideration on properties where maintaining soil structure and groundcover is a priority.

Industry and DPI-aligned work also point to reduced fuel use and lower emissions compared to tractor-based spraying systems, with some estimates indicating emissions reductions of up to approximately 50% depending on the application and system used. Reduced water volumes and more targeted application can also lower the risk of runoff and off-target movement when conditions are appropriate.

Where it fits

Drone application does not replace conventional spraying. Boom spraying remains the most efficient option for large, uniform areas where access is not a constraint.

The value of drones sits in more constrained situations, including wet conditions, difficult terrain, fragmented blocks, or targeted treatment zones where access, timing, and reduced ground impact are the primary considerations.

This was a single day on-site, but it reinforces that drone application is a practical addition to the farm management toolkit when used selectively and with the right operator.

For broader context, the Queensland DPI’s AgTech in Action provides a useful reference on the role of drone technology in Australian agriculture.

We appreciate OzTech Drones’ work on the day and their professional approach in-field.

AGRITECH INNOVATION | PARTNERSHIP SPOTLIGHT

Taking Agriculture to New Heights

How MFM is partnering with OzTech Drones to deliver smarter, safer, and more sustainable land management across Australia.

At MFM, we believe that true leadership in land management means staying ahead — not just keeping up. That means investing in the technologies that deliver measurable outcomes for our clients, their land, and the communities around them. It means being willing to challenge the way things have always been done, and having the courage to adopt better solutions when they emerge.

That is exactly why we are proud to be working with OzTech Drones — one of Australia’s largest agricultural drone application providers — to bring precision aerial spraying and land treatment services to our clients.

Why Drone Technology? Why Now?

The agricultural and land management sectors are under increasing pressure. Rising input costs, stricter environmental regulations, labour shortages, and the challenge of managing country that ranges from steep escarpments to waterlogged floodplains — these are the realities our clients face every season. Traditional machinery has served us well, but it was designed for a different era.

Drone technology has matured to the point where it is no longer a novelty — it is a genuine operational advantage. Queensland’s Department of Primary Industries (DPI) has recognised this shift, actively supporting the integration of drone technology into agricultural practice as part of a broader agtech agenda. MFM is committed to being at the leading edge of that transition.

About OzTech Drones

OzTech Drones is not a startup experiment. With years of operational experience and a client base that includes some of Australia’s most respected farming and resource companies, OzTech has built a reputation for reliability, technical expertise, and real-world results. Their work spans agriculture, mining rehabilitation, and gas operations — industries where the margin for error is low and the demand for performance is high.

Partnering with OzTech means our clients are accessing a proven platform — not a pilot programme. It means knowledge, compliance, and capability, backed by the depth of experience that only comes from years in the field.

The Advantages That Matter for Our Clients

The case for drone-based application is compelling across every dimension — operational, financial, environmental, and human. Here is what makes the difference.

Precision That Reduces Waste and Cost

Modern agricultural drones use GPS guidance and advanced onboard sensors to apply chemicals with centimetre-level accuracy. The result is consistent, targeted application — no more over-spray, no more missed patches. Clients can expect:

  • Up to 50% savings on chemical inputs through precise, ultra-low-volume application
  • Up to 90% reduction in water usage compared to conventional spray methods
  • Minimal overlap and waste, with every litre doing the work it was intended to do

Speed and Scale

Time is money on every property, and drone spraying is fast. A single drone unit can cover 4 to 20 hectares per hour — translating to 30 to 150 hectares per day depending on the terrain, crop type, and task at hand. Combined with dramatically reduced setup time compared to a tractor and boom spray rig, the overall turnaround on treatment programmes is transformed. Labour costs can be reduced by up to 90%, and fuel savings further improve the economics of each application.

Access Where Machinery Cannot Go

Some of the most challenging country in Queensland and beyond — steep hills, rocky outcrops, wet floodplains, and post-rain paddocks — has historically been difficult or impossible to treat effectively. Drones operate above terrain rather than through it. Wet ground after a rainfall event is no longer a reason to delay a spray programme. Steep slopes that would put a ground rig at risk are treated cleanly and safely from the air.

Environmental Responsibility

By operating above the crop canopy rather than driving through it, drones eliminate soil compaction and avoid the physical damage caused by heavy machinery moving through paddocks. Precise application means less chemical runoff into waterways and local ecosystems. Compared to tractor-based operations, drone spraying can reduce carbon emissions by up to 50% — a meaningful advantage for clients working toward sustainability reporting or environmental certification.

Operator Safety

There is a straightforward human benefit that is easy to overlook in the technical detail: drone spraying removes the operator from direct chemical exposure. Spray drift, inhalation risk, and skin contact — hazards that accompany every traditional spray operation — are substantially reduced. For any business that takes its duty of care seriously, that is not a minor consideration.

Leadership in Practice

MFM’s partnership with OzTech Drones is an expression of a core belief: that the best service we can offer our clients is one that uses every available advantage on their behalf. We are not technology advocates for its own sake. We are results advocates — and when the data consistently shows that drone application delivers superior precision, lower cost, better environmental outcomes, and greater safety, the path forward is clear.

We invest in relationships with industry leaders like OzTech because our clients deserve to work with people who are at the top of their field. That combination — MFM’s property knowledge and management expertise alongside OzTech’s operational drone capability — gives our clients an edge that is genuinely difficult to replicate.

What Makes Drone Spraying Worth Considering?

The technology has come a long way. This is not a gimmick — there are real, measurable advantages across a range of applications. Here is what stands out.

Precision and Chemical Savings

Drones use GPS guidance and onboard sensors to apply chemicals with centimetre-level accuracy, which means far less waste and far more consistent coverage. In practical terms:

  • Up to 50% savings on chemical inputs
  • Up to 90% reduction in water usage through ultra-low-volume application
  • Minimal overlap and drift compared to conventional methods

Speed and Efficiency

A single drone can cover 4 to 20 hectares per hour — up to 150 hectares in a day. Setup is faster than a tractor and boom rig, and labour requirements are dramatically lower. For large or time-sensitive jobs, that adds up quickly.

Getting Into Difficult Country

This is where drones really earn their keep. Steep slopes, rocky ground, wet paddocks after rain — terrain that would stop or damage conventional machinery is no obstacle from the air. Jobs that previously had to wait, or simply could not be done, become straightforward.

Environmental Benefits

Less chemical runoff, no soil compaction, no crop damage from machinery moving through paddocks, and up to 50% lower carbon emissions compared to tractor-based application. For anyone with environmental reporting obligations or simply a commitment to looking after their country, these are meaningful numbers.

Operator Safety

Keeping operators out of direct contact with chemicals is a genuine win. Reduced spray drift exposure and inhalation risk are benefits that should not be overlooked.

Our Take

We are not in the business of recommending technology for its own sake — but when something demonstrably delivers better results at lower cost and with less environmental impact, it is worth knowing about. Drone spraying is maturing fast, and for the right application it can be a genuine step forward.

If you would like to explore whether it makes sense for your operation, we are happy to talk it through.
