Foliar Nutrition – Precision Care for the Canopy
Healthy canopies are the engine room of macadamia orchards, driving flowering, nut set, and long-term productivity. Alongside soil health practices, foliar nutrition is one of the key tools we use to keep canopies performing at their best. By delivering nutrients directly to the leaves, foliar sprays provide targeted support at critical growth stages throughout the season.
What is Foliar Spraying?
Foliar spraying is the process of applying nutrients directly to the leaves of the tree. This allows them to be absorbed quickly through the leaf surface and put to work where they are needed. In macadamia orchards, it’s a targeted way to support canopy health at key stages of the season.
The MFM Approach
At MFM, foliar applications are timed to align with seasonal growth stages and orchard needs. Regular soil and leaf analysis guide nutrient choices, ensuring sprays target specific requirements rather than applying a “one size fits all” mix. This helps maintain canopy health, support flowering, and sustain productivity across the year.
Equipment for Even Coverage
This application was carried out using a Pastro Ag sprayer, designed for consistent coverage across the canopy. Even application is key to getting the full benefit from foliar nutrition, whether targeting new leaf growth, pre-flowering preparation, or post-harvest recovery.
What’s in the Mix
For this run, the spray included low-biuret urea, seaweed, and other nutrients as part of a balanced foliar program. Low-biuret urea provides nitrogen in a form suitable for leaf application, reducing the risk of leaf burn. Seaweed products can contribute additional nutrients and naturally occurring compounds that support plant function and resilience.
Across the macadamia industry, foliar programs may also include nutrients such as zinc, boron, magnesium, or molybdenum at specific times of the season. These are often applied to address identified deficiencies or to support key growth stages such as flowering, nut set, and canopy development.
Benefits to the Orchard
Foliar spraying can:
- Provide a quick nutrient boost to the canopy.
- Support healthy leaf colour and function.
- Complement the soil nutrition program.
- Help maintain overall orchard performance through the season.
Part of a Broader Program
Foliar nutrition is just one part of MFM’s orchard management strategy. By combining regular monitoring, quality inputs, and precision application, we ensure every spray is a targeted investment in the long-term health and productivity of our orchards.
From Planting to Flowering: Regeneration Progress
The Goodwood Road regeneration zone is showing encouraging signs of progress, with some of the native plants established during the 2024 restoration works now flowering. The appearance of flowers shows that some of the young plants are becoming established. Over time, the developing vegetation will provide additional food and habitat for insects, birds and other…
Vortex Hydroseeder Operator Training
Supporting Orchard Development, Rehabilitation and Erosion Control Hydroseeding plays an important role in orchard development, land rehabilitation and erosion control. Following earthworks, drainage construction or infrastructure installation, exposed soils require rapid stabilisation to minimise erosion, suppress dust and encourage the establishment of healthy vegetation. To support these activities, the PAR Orchard Group has invested in…
From Orchard to Processor: Inside Wide Bay Sort
Every macadamia harvested from an orchard begins another important stage of its journey long before it reaches a processor, exporter or customer. Freshly harvested nuts cannot simply be stored or transported. They must first be cleaned, dehusked, dried and sorted to protect quality and prepare them for the next stage of the supply chain. These…
Beyond the Orchard: Protecting Quality from Processing to Export with Australian Premium Macadamias (APM)
Every premium macadamia begins its journey in the orchard, but producing a high-quality kernel requires far more than successful growing. Once harvested, the crop enters a carefully managed supply chain where moisture, temperature, handling and quality assurance all influence the final product. For orchard managers, these stages are a continuation of the work that begins…
From the Ground Up: The MFM Harvester Story
From the workshop floor to the orchard rows. 🚜🔧 At MFM, harvest doesn’t begin when the machines enter the orchard. It starts long before that in our Welcome Creek Workshop, where our team designs, fabricates and continually refines equipment specifically for macadamia orchards. This latest harvester is the result of years of practical harvest experience,…
Planting Bee-Friendly Trees with Dr Chris Cannizzaro, Horticulturist
At Macadamia Farm Management (MFM), we are committed to implementing sustainable practices that not only enhance the health and productivity of our orchards but also provide significant returns for our clients. Our latest initiative, led by our Horticulturist Dr Chris Cannizzaro, focuses on planting bee-friendly trees to bolster biodiversity and support native pollinators. This project,…
