Transport
Skip bins play a vital role in macadamia harvesting, providing an efficient way to transport nuts from orchard to processing. However, proper management is essential to maintaining nut quality and ensuring a smooth harvesting operation. MFM has been investing in improved bin designs, including aerated models, to further enhance nut preservation during transport.
Design by Macadamia Farm ManagementKey Considerations for Maintaining Nut Quality
- Avoid overnight storage – Skip bins should not be used as storage. Nuts left in bins for extended periods are more susceptible to heat, humidity, and fermentation, which can impact quality. A high bin turnover rate ensures nuts remain fresh.
- Keep bins clean – Residue from previous loads, dirt, or moisture can contribute to mould growth and contamination. Regular washing and drying help prevent these issues.
- Ensure adequate aeration – Traditional skip bins without ventilation can trap heat and moisture, increasing the risk of fermentation, mould growth, and oil degradation in the kernel. MFM is introducing new aerated skip bins, designed to regulate airflow and reduce these risks during transport.
- Minimise heat exposure – Skip bins left in direct sunlight can accelerate moisture retention inside the husk, leading to quality loss. Position bins in shaded areas where possible and ensure timely collection.
- Monitor moisture levels – Damp nuts can lead to fungal growth and reduced quality. Ensuring nuts are sufficiently dry before transport is essential.
- Prevent physical damage – Rough handling or overfilled bins can cause cracking or bruising, which affects kernel quality. Gentle handling and proper loading practices help mitigate this risk.
Efficient Use of Skip Bins in Harvest Logistics
To streamline operations, MFM utilises well-planned skip bin placement and efficient collection scheduling. Strategic bin placement reduces harvester travel time, ensuring faster offloading and minimising the risk of delays. Additionally, when moving skip bins, gentle handling and careful transport help prevent kernel breakage.
With the introduction of newly designed aerated skip bins, MFM is working to further improve macadamia transport conditions. These bins will be showcased in upcoming harvest operations, with images and demonstrations available to farm managers.
Farms using digital harvest tracking systems, such as Fieldin, should ensure they update relevant fields, including bin movements, pickup times, and aeration monitoring, to help coordinate logistics and prevent unnecessary bottlenecks. Integrated tracking systems allow for better scheduling, real-time data collection, and improved efficiency in bin management.
Ensuring a Smooth Process
Skip bins are more than just transport containers—they are an integral part of ensuring macadamias reach processing in optimal condition. By implementing best practices for handling and logistics, farm managers can preserve nut quality while maintaining efficient harvesting operations.
