Welcoming Our New Boilermaker Apprentices

Macadamia Farm Management (MFM) is pleased to welcome two new apprentices to our fabrication team at Welcome Creek. Joe and Jack have signed on as 1st year apprentices in the Engineering Fabrication Trade (Boilermaking/Welding), supported by MAS National Apprenticeship Support Services. They will be training under the guidance of Workshop Manager Graham Black and Workshop Supervisor Leigh Murrin, alongside Peter Templeton, who is now entering the 4th year of his Boilermaking apprenticeship.

Meet Joe

Apprentice
Joe has already gained experience working part-time in the MFM Fabrication shop and now begins his apprenticeship with the goal of becoming an “all-rounder” in welding and fabrication. His passion for learning every aspect of the trade makes him a strong addition to the team. Away from work, Joe enjoys cooking, home life, and relaxing with family and friends.

Meet Peter

Apprentice
Peter is entering the 4th year of his apprenticeship and he is proud to be performing welding and fabrication on all aspects of our MFM harvester builds. Prior to his apprenticeship, Peter has operated Macadamia Harvesters which has provided him an extra level of understanding what he is building.
On the weekends, Peter enjoys unwinding, working on and riding his motorcycles.

Meet Jack

Apprentice
Jack has also worked for MFM previously, gaining experience in sort shed assembly and operations. He is looking forward to mastering his trade and, in time, passing on his skills to future apprentices.

Outside of work, Jack enjoys pottering around his home, maintaining his lawn and gardens.

Building Skills for the Future

Skilled boilermakers are in demand, and by supporting apprentices like Joe, Jack, and Peter, MFM is investing in the long-term strength of our fabrication workshop and creating career pathways for young people in our region.

We look forward to seeing their skills grow and celebrating their achievements as they progress in their trade.

Beyond Apprenticeships: Building for the Harvest

The Welcome Creek fabrication workshop doesn’t just train apprentices — it also plays a vital role in building and maintaining the specialised machinery that keeps our orchards running smoothly.

Right now, the team is busy constructing new macadamia harvesters ahead of the season. These custom-built machines are designed to suit the unique needs of our orchards, helping to improve efficiency, protect nut quality, and keep harvest operations moving safely and effectively.

Our apprentices gain hands-on experience in these projects, learning how innovation in the workshop connects directly to productivity in the field.

From Sort Sheds to Skilled Trades

Career journeys at MFM often begin in different parts of the business. Before starting his apprenticeship, Jack gained experience in post-harvest operations, working in the sort sheds. That early hands-on role gave him valuable insight into the scale of our operations and the importance of well-maintained machinery in delivering a clean, quality crop.

Experiences like these show how pathways at MFM can lead from seasonal and operational work into skilled trades and long-term careers.

This story is part of our Careers at MFM series. Keep an eye out for more profiles of the people shaping the future of macadamia farming across our orchards, workshops, and operations.
